The second issue of the new Disney™ Cinema Masterpieces Series was struck by the New Zealand Mint from three ounces of 99.9% silver in proof quality and is dedicated to the successful cinema classic The Lion King™. The motive features a colorful depiction of Mufasa, the king of lions, and Sarabi, who holds a little Simba in her arms. In the foreground is a montage of images from the film, depicted on an engraved film reel. The reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as well as denomination and year of issue. The film had its world premiere in New York on June 24th, 1994, and is still one of the most successful classic animated films.
"The Lion King™" begins with the celebration of the birth of Simba, the son of the Lion King. He is supposed to take over the throne from his father Mufasa one day. But Simba's evil uncle Scar has made plans of his own and has his eyes set on the throne as king of the lions. He has his brother Mufasa murdered and persuades young Simba that he is responsible for his father's death. He urges the frightened Simba to flee and never return to his homeland. Thereupon begins the adventure for little Simba, who after a close chase meets his future best friends Timon and Pumbaa. While Simba grows into an adult lion alongside his friends, his uncle Scar rules over the land. But his greed causes nature to decay and his people to starve. Simba learns of his uncle's machinations when he accidentally meets his old lion friend Nala. After considerable persuasion, Simba returns to his home and confronts Scar and his hyenas. In the end, Simba is able to defeat his uncle at the top of King's Rock and is crowned King of the Lions after all. The limited The Lion King™ - 3 oz silver proof coin in color is delivered in the original box including a certificate of authenticity.
